The Community
Living together in harmony
Ranku Community was set up in 1993. and currently has about 15 houses and 70 residents. The main family groups represented are Tipungwuti, Kantilla, Potaminni and Puatjimi.
Ranku(as it's locally known) is on the western side of Bathurst Island 66 dirt road kilometers from the main town of Nguiu.
Ranku is self sufficient in that it has it's own power generators, bore for water supply and school.

Well, back to the store. Fridges, washing machines, guitars and guitar strings, bicycles, ammo, bait & ice, fuel, reading glasses, kero lamp glasses, apples to xylophones!! You may even find a country music CD or one of the latest release indigenous band CDs.

And one other thing, in a small community like this - this is the place for all the goss!! Then we have the licensed Club. The Club license is a bit restricted, like it's pretty hard to get sloshed and we only open for 3 ½ hours...

The space is a bit limited to go into every-thing. Fishing, hunting, eco trips okay. But with max four persons, you're not a tourist group. You will be escorted by one of the locals who will look after you. Well, we haven't lost anyone - YET!!

Some amazing stuff
Ranku is cooler than Nguiu and people travel here for the fresher weather. Also the non-indigenous visitors are very welcome and often visit the local people to go fishing, hunting or to help them with their favorite pastimes which may involve traditional wood carving.
